Suicidal Ideations

I’ve been struggling with my mental health recently, and unfortunately, suicidal thoughts have been involved. I decided to write an informative post about suicidal ideation to help educate people about it and the feelings involved with it.

There are two types of suicidal ideation: passive and active.

A person who is experiencing passive suicidal ideation will usually wish they would die by a means other than suicide. For example, they may hope they don’t wake up the next day, or that they die in a car accident. They may exhibit indifference in regard to their own life. Please note: this is just an example and does not necessarily describe the thoughts or opinions of everyone who experiences passive suicidal ideation.

A person who is experiencing active suicidal ideation usually thinks about suicide and may have the intent of dying by suicide. This may also include the development of a plan.

Both passive and active suicidal ideation is dangerous and should be taken seriously.

What are the signs?

There are some common signs involved when someone is experiencing suicidal ideation. This is a not complete list.

  • Withdrawing or secluding oneself from all social contact (online and/or in person)
  • Severe mood swings or personality changes, including but not limited to anxiety or agitation
  • Change in normal routine, including eating habits or sleeping patterns
  • Increasing use of alcohol or recreational drugs
  • Participating in risky or self-destructing things
  • Expressing feelings of hopelessness or being trapped
  • Giving away belongings
  • Discussing or beginning the process of getting affairs in order
  • Preoccupation with death or dying
  • Saying goodbye to people
  • Getting the means to take their own life (such as buying a weapon)
  • Talking about suicide


Feelings often involved with suicidal ideation

If you know someone who is experiencing suicidal ideation, please be respectful of them and their situation. Remain calm, and offer to listen to them without trying to offer unsolicited advice.
